Asante recently earned top-20 status in the nation for “Humanizing” patient experiences. With health care providers like Melissa Cox, a nurse at Asante Three Rivers Medical Center’s nuclear medicine department, it’s no surprise. Here is the story from a co-worker:
“It was difficult to know how much the patient and his wife understood the gravity of his condition after his angiogram. By the time he was out of recovery, the doctor had gone back to their clinic. Melissa worked closely with them, answering questions. She even delivered the bad news that the doctor received confirmation that surgery would not benefit the patient.
“The day was waning. It would be hard for them to get home. Melissa found out the patient’s wife didn’t drive, and they lived out of the county. Melissa was able to secure a room at the Family House for the night after his recovery. She and I drove them over and Melissa went inside to assist them with check-in. To ensure they knew where to eat, Melissa showed them the grocery store and restaurants within walking distance. The family was very grateful and kept thanking Melissa for all the help and kindness she showed them.”
For going the extra distance, Melissa was nominated by a co-worker for a DAISY Award.

What is the DAISY Award?
The DAISY Foundation was established in 1999 in honor of Patrick Barnes, who died in Seattle of idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura. His parents created the DAISY Foundation (DAISY is an acronym for diseases attacking the immune system) to recognize nurses for the exceptional care they provided their son during his illness. Patients and others may nominate nurses for a DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses at Asante Ashland, Asante Rogue Regional or Asante Three Rivers, based on factors including care of and compassion for patients and their loved ones.
